Chapter 4 – Bridging Science and Spirituality

Chapter 4 is an exploration into the exciting field of neurotheology that presents current thinking about the different functions of mind and the neuropsychological basis of mystical experiences, including the importance of myth and ritual. A growing body of evidence points towards the importance of the integration of scientific and spiritual knowledge. Both science and spirituality are seen as complementary aspects of a greater whole, and greater understanding stems from dialogue between the two disciplines. As a result, a new discipline has arisen that appears to blur the edges between science and spirituality: neurotheology. Neurotheological research promises to provide valuable clues about our ability as human beings to have mystical or transcendental experiences, and to access these higher states of awareness through meditation.
